Uluru (Ayers
Rock) Early
Aboriginal art is etched and stained into the walls of caves, but in
the desert, artists also used ochre and other natural pigments to
create elaborate images in the sand.
Uluru and Kata Tjuta
were formed about 600 million years ago. Uluru stands in the
territory of the Yankuntjatjara Aboriginal people.
The explorer W.C. Gosse named Ayers Rock
in 1873 being the first European to climb it. In 1987 the park was
handed back to the traditional owners.
Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)
Kata Tjuta is made of 36 rock domes of
various sizes soread out over an area of 35 square km. Mount Olga,
the highest feature rises up to 546 metres above the desert and 1072
above sea level.
